Golden Memories

This morning I had Golden Grahams for breakfast. I hardly ever eat cereal, but it seemed like a good idea when I was at the store last night. So this morning I ate Golden Grahams.

Every time I eat Golden Grahams I think of Girls State. You see, food was scarce that week. For lunch one day we had this: two lettuce leaves, one scoop of chicken salad, and four crackers.

Breakfasts were hit and miss on the hot food, so we usually ate cereal. About half the tables had Golden Grahams. Each city was assigned two tables, and every day you just hoped your city got one of the Golden Graham tables. One day, my city's tables were at the front of the room, right by the head tables. All the old ladies were eating the hot food, so we asked for their box of cereal. It was serious business.

Every time I eat Golden Grahams I think of Girls State.

Every time I think of Girls State, I sing...

We came to Girls State, we want you to know
To learn about the government and how it should go
They say that East Central is full of joy
You don't have time to think about boys!

Wanna bet?!?

Cowboy boots, tight blue Wranglers
Big belt buckle and man-oh-man
He's got
Cowboy boots, tight blue Wranglers
Big belt buckle
He's a rodeo man!

Doo-doo-doo-doot. Doot-dooo. Doo-doo-doot. Doo.
Doot. Doot. Doo-doo-doot. Doo-doot. Doo.
Doot. Doo. Doo-doo-doot. Doo.
Doot. Doot. Doo-doo. He's a rodeo man.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Repeat with as many verses as you choose to make up.

{Disco man. Fraternity man. The Best in the Land (Boys State). A few faves.}

Or...

Just a boy and a girl in a little canoe
With the moon shinin' all around.
And as they pulled their paddles back
You couldn't even hear a sound (no sound).
So they talked and they talked
'Till the moon grew dim
He said you'd better kiss me or get out and swim
So whatcha gonna do in a little canoe
With the moon shinin' all a-
Boats floatin' all a-
Girls swimmin' all around?

Swim, baby, swim!
Don't you give in!

Stay, baby, stay!
I like it that way!

Or the classic...

Ooooooooo!
'Klahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains
And the waving wheat, it sure smells sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.

Ooooooooo!
'Klahoma every night my honey-lamb and I
Sit alone and talk, and watch the hawk
Making lazy circles in the sky

We know we belong to the land (yes, sir!)
And the land we belong to is grand (you bet!)
And when we say Yeah!
Ay-yippe-ay-oh-aaaaaay
We're only sayin'
You're doin' fine Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!
Oklahoma! Yeaow!!

Or...

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high-flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave

You're the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave!

Every heart beats true for the red, white, and blue
Where there's never a boast or brag.

But should all acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Every song had hand motions, hand claps, foot stomps, arm links, yells, or all five. And in my mind, all those happen.

Every time I think about Girls State.

Every time I eat Golden Grahams.

Values, Part 2

Love and Wisdom.

Here was my thinking...If you have family without love or wisdom, you lose your family. Same thing with friends. If you have love and wisdom, you will be authentic, at peace, have integrity, etc. And it almost never fails that if you have love and wisdom you will gain recognition, status, power, and all those things that might not have even made the first cut. I was talking to Chelley about this, and she made a good point: If you have love without wisdom, you really can get yourself into a mess.

As soon as I made my final two choices, I stopped to think about my reasoning behind my reasoning. Love. (Faith, hope, and love...But the greatest is love. God is love. Love your neighbor as yourself.) Wisdom. (The entire book of Proverbs.)

Values are based upon worldviews. It's good to know I have such a Biblical worldview that I know the right answers without having to think it through...And when I do think it through, I know why the answers are right. (Thanks, mom and dad!)

My classmates had interesting answers, I thought. Most of them said family (which is a great one) and then there was a variety of answers on the second one...lots of love and happiness...one status.

When so many people chose happiness, I was surprised. That didn't get past Round 2 on my list. Nobody chose joy. So I asked why. (Joy was #3 on my list.) Sometimes I'm shocked that not everyone has the same core beliefs that I have. They all saw joy and happiness as the same thing. I disagreed and said that happiness is based on situations, but joy is deeper. They believed the opposite. Not wanting to get into a spiritual discussion in class, I let it go. But I really was shocked. And sad. To not know real, deep, hope-filled, sustaining, strengthening joy...I can't even imagine.

Values

We did this in class last week. It was pretty interesting, so I thought I would share.

Below is a list of values. Choose the eight that are the most important to you.

Peace
Integrity
Wealth
Joy
Happiness
Love
Success
Recognition
Friendship
Family
Fame
Truth
Authenticity
Wisdom
Power
Status
Influence
Justice
{___________}
{___________}

(Center for Ethical Leadership)

Now that you have your top eight, narrow those down to five.

(You probably see where this is going. Just bear with me...The process is important.)

When you have five, choose three.

And now your top two.

What did you end up with? Let me know. Later on I'll post my answers and those of my classmates.

Sophomore Tuesdays

"What is your favorite day of the week?" It's a question that is thrown around a lot, and I just can't decide on an answer.

Saturdays and Sundays are good. But then so is Friday because it's the last work day and also jeans day (also No-Drama Friday). But Thursdays are pretty good, too, because it's the last dress-up day for the week and anticipation of Friday sets in. Wednesdays are OK because they get you over the hump. Mondays aren't too bad, either, because you're still somewhat rested and de-stressed from the weekend. (TGIM, right? Aug-Sept 07)

That leaves Tuesdays.

What are Tuesdays?

Nothing.

Tuesdays are nothing.

Tuesdays are like being a sophomore.

What are the benefits of being a sophomore? What is unique about being a sophomore? Does anyone know?

No. No one knows. This is why we have sophomore slumps.

With freshmen, everything is new, everything is a learning experience, everything is "the first." Juniors are now upper-classmen, but don't have the stress of trying to figure out what's next. Seniors are seniors, and we all know the benefits there. But sophomores...That's just a survival year.

Tuesdays are like being a sophomore.

Or like being 22.

What's with 22, anyway? 21 is a landmark. At 23 you're IN your 20's. 24 is like being a Junior...you're almost to the landmark 25, but you don't have the "I'm now getting old" thing going on. And 25...Well, 25 is 25. But 22? As a friend in college said, all 22 is, is 2x11.

Tuesdays are like being a sophomore.

Maybe I'll start calling them Sophomore Tuesdays.

Note to Chelley that probably nobody else will really care about...Maybe we should talk about this...Could Sophomore Tuesdays be an idea for a 2nd year program?

Catching Up

Hi, friends! Tonight will be several thoughts, related only in that they come from my head.

=====

...The Hillcat men are #1 in NAIA for the second week in a row. I just got home from a game, where we beat Oklahoma Christian (#17) 70-56. The place was packed. OK, not quite packed, but there were more people there than I've ever seen. It was sooo fun! You should be a fan, too.

...My two-weekend-and-a-project class met last weekend. It went by very quickly. She (prof) is tons of fun, an expert, very hands-on, and non-conventional in her teaching. Most of the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday we worked on creating a plan for an organization that's going through change. Instead of just doing a case-study, though, like you would in most classes, she talked her friend into coming to talk about his organization. We got to ask him questions for about an hour before we started working on our plans. Such a great experience.

...Bekah posted a really incredible blog today. It is high on my recommended reading list. I also will take this opportunity to say how proud I am of my little sister. It's funny how you want your siblings to be better, do better than you. I read her writings, listen to her arguments...She's very good.

...We got two days off work last week because of ice. Thank You, Lord; I needed those days.

...Tonight I read an article for my Foundations of Higher Ed class. It was the last bit of my reading for the week (for that class), and I grudgingly began. After approximately two paragraphs...Wow. It is, hands-down, the best piece of material I've ever read about higher education. Or education in general. Or possibly anything, for that matter. Written by Yale faculty, the Yale Report of 1828 was written in response to talk of changing curriculum to exclude 'dead languages'...Greek and Latin. They wrote it in two parts. Part one is a discourse on the purpose of higher education itself. Part two is an argument to keep the classical languages. Quite eloquently, it answers the question, "Why do I have to learn {subject} if I want to be a {profession}?" This document should be the mission statement for every institution in the nation. If you have any interest whatsoever, take the time to read it. I guarantee you will be inspired.

...John turns another year older next week. I get to go home to celebrate on Sunday. :)

...My bathroom ceiling is still in good shape. The toilet has issues, but the ceiling is great.

...I finally got my driver's side window fixed, so I can do things like go to Sonic or go through the Turnpike booth without opening my door. This is happy news.

...We opened our new Student Services Center last Monday. The first time I walked in, I actually got a little emotional. It felt like we were real school. I mean, we are a real school...but it felt like it. I love it.

Over and out.
